What a catalog is good at
A catalog is honest when it behaves like a bookstore. inRole’s trans page is a bookstore: filters, tags, greetings, and a FAQ that says you can create characters for free, including private or public visibility. Talkie and Character.AI work the same way at the result level — you are dropped into one title in a huge library.
Use a catalog when you want variety, one-off scenes, or to steal structure from a greeting. Do not use a catalog when you wanted someone who already knows last Tuesday. Libraries do not remember you unless you have an account and a save slot.
What a companion is supposed to be
A companion product sells continuity: you make or pick one character, you keep chatting, and the app claims memory, images, or voice as extras. Candy AI describes itself as an AI girlfriend app where you create personalized virtual companions or talk to featured characters, with roleplay, images, and voice mentioned on its own pages. That is a companion pitch, not a tag wall.
Companion pitches still fail. Memory windows are limited. Models reset tone. Image generators ignore the identity you typed. So the test is not the homepage headline. The test is whether your saved character still uses the right pronouns after you leave and come back.

Custom characters are not automatically safer
Creating your own trans character sounds like control. It is, until the platform publishes it, trains on it, or lets the model ignore your bio. inRole says created characters must follow content policies and can be public or private. Read that as a to-do: set private, skip other people’s photos, and do not write a bio that asks the model to play a minor.
If your goal is a private adult companion rather than a public roleplay listing, a companion app with account settings may fit better than a social catalog. That is a fit question, not a moral ranking.
