The save-slot problem
SpicyChat’s ranking character page told unregistered visitors that chats would not be saved and that text and image generation were limited. That single sentence is the whole free-tier lesson. If the conversation is the product, an unsaved chat is a sample, not the product.
Character.AI’s ranking card asked for sign-up before chat. That is a different tax: you pay with an account even if money does not move yet. Decide whether you are willing to create that account before you get attached to the greeting.
Images, voice, and video are not the chat
Talkie’s ranking character mixed text, voice, image, and video generation on one page. inRole’s FAQ offers one free video generation per day on a basic model, with higher-quality models behind paid plans. Those extras are easy to confuse with “the chat is better.” They are not. A pretty picture of the wrong pronouns is still a fail.
If you only needed text, do not let a video upsell decide the purchase. If you did need images, test whether the generator respects the identity you set — most will not, on the first try.
- Text save: does history survive a refresh?
- Model: is the free model the one in the ads?
- Media: are images/voice gated after one sample?
How to read a paywall without believing the slogan
Look for a pricing or premium button, then look for what happens at zero. inRole states there is a free plan with basic features and Premium/Pro for advanced models. That is clearer than “unlimited.” Candy AI is a subscription companion; its public FAQ and privacy notice exist, while the obvious /terms path returned a 404 when we fetched it. Missing contract pages are a reason to pause, not a reason to invent terms.
Never treat an affiliate payout or a “best app” headline as a consumer price. We do not know what you will be charged until you open the live checkout on that product.
Quick answers
Is free AI trans chat always a trap?
No. Free is useful for the pronoun test. It becomes a trap when you expect memory, images, or privacy that the free row never promised.
Should I start paid on day one?
Not if the free session already breaks identity. Pay only after a returning visit still holds pronouns.
